Qualifications
Prior to entering any hiring competition for Probationary Fire Fighter at Chestermere Fire and Rescue, all candidates must be willing to provide proof of the following qualifications:
At least 18 years of age
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
- Alberta High School Diploma or equivalent
- Current Standard First Aid and Level C CPR certification
- Valid Alberta Class 2 Drivers License or equivalent
- Able to clearly speak, read and write English
- Air Brake/Q-Endorsement
- Boat Operators Licence
The candidate may be asked to provide proof of these qualifications at any time during the recruitment process. Failure to provide proof will result in immediate removal from the current competition.
Process
The hiring process takes place in five sections
- Application
- Written Exam
- Physical Exam
- Interviews
- Entry Level Fire Fighter Program
1. Application. Any candidate who meets the necessary qualifications is invited to submit an application during the first section of any open competition. Applications will only be accepted while this section of the competition is open.
2. Written Exam. All qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the written exam. The exam includes but is not limited to mechanical aptitude, mathematics, reading comprehension, mapping and judgement. The written exam is approximately 100 questions with a time limit of 2 hours.
3. Physical Exam. Candidates with top ranking scores from the written exam will be invited to the physical exam. The physical exam will include but is not limited to run, ladder raise and extension, victim drag, search, hose drag and pull, and hose hoist. The physical exam will primarily be conducted outdoors, so candidates should be prepared for poor weather.
No exceptions to the exam dates or times will be made. Candidates should ensure availability for the dates posted.
4. Interviews. Successful candidates who are invited to the interview portion of the process should expect at least two interviews with Officers and/or Fire Fighters of Chestermere Fire and Rescue.
5. Entry Level Fire Fighter Program. Successful candidates must successfully complete the Entry Level Fire Fighter Program regardless of previous training. The Entry Level Fire Fighter Program is taught in-house by members of Chestermere Fire and Rescue and will provide Trainees with basic fire fighting knowledge and skills.
Throughout the recruitment process, the recruitment team will be assessing candidates personal interactions with the public, other candidates and active members of the department.
No detailed results will be provided to candidates who are not successful in the recruitment process
